DC THOMSON

DECEASED

It was all because of the Iron Men of the Sea, that astounding gang which had established a reign of terror on the South Coast.

Clad in armoured diving-suits which were proof against ordinary bomb or bullets, they could come and go just as they liked, walking on the sea bed as easily as on a road. Bill and Dan had been mixed up with them from the beginning, for Bill Storm was a professional diver who had been employed on a job at Dover.

He had followed the Iron Men into the sea once too often, for he had been cornered, and was being carried back to their underwater stronghold when a little dwarf, only half the height of an ordinary man, but clad in a miniature diving-suit, had appeared and rescued the young diver from the clutches of the gang.

The Red Racketeers

Suddenly the roar of a powerful engine was heard and the pedestrians scattered all directions.

A long, low automobile came racing into the town at a furious pace.

It had a unusual appearance. The body was made completely of steel and the wheels were protected by sheets of armoured plate. Even the windscreen had been replaced by a metal shield provided with a narrow slit through which the driver gazed.

A wild cry arose. "The Red Racketeers!"

Do people who live in small houses have any room for complaint?

Is the giraffe the highest form of life?

In 1808, two Frenchmen quarrelled, and a challenge was immediately issued. Ballooning was at the time a great craze, and thus M. de Grandpre and M. de Pique decided to fight their duel in the air.

Each duellist, with his second, got into a balloon in a field adjoining the Tuilleries, and in the presence of a great crowd the cords were cut, and up shot the balloons. The weapons were blunder-busses.

When about 800 feet in the air, de Pique fired, and Grandpre immediately replied. The latter's shot found the mark and penetrated de Pique's balloon, which rapidly descended.

De Pique and his second were dashed to death on a housetop, while Grandpre and his second alighted safely about seven miles from where the ascent was made.
