Lion managed to survive for quite awhile by changing with the times. Have a look at the Lion from 1973 in the Bibliography section to see how the front cover changed in the seventies.

Over it's lifespan it  teamed up with 'Lion and Sun' in 1959, 'Lion and Champion' in 1966, 'Lion and Eagle' in 1969 and 'Lion and Thunder' in 1971

I was a regular reader of Lion from the time it became Lion and Thunder. I seem to remember it ending up being taken over by Valiant, I remember only a couple of stories surviving the takeover. - David Dunnico

I was browsing the web and came across your very excellent site - well done and very informative. My late father W.R. Bunn was the illustrater for Fleetway Publications during the 50s and 60s and I remember he 'drew' the main features of, in the 50s, Rory MacDuff (and Barney Lomax) and in the 60s it was 'Spider' an American style superhero. On other occasions he undertook 'Zip Nolan' and also 'Spellbinder'. He died in 1971 after a long illness. I confess to wishing I had paid more attention to his work as I have precious little of it today. But it was just an ordinary routine to see him work in his studio at home sometimes for 17 hours a day to complete the weekly issue. He actually went insane and that was the illness mentioned earlier. It is very nice to see someone making the effort to keep these comics from being a lost memory. My father would have been very pleased to see your site - thankyou. - Trevor Bunn

The original cover-star of 'Lion' was Space-Hero 'Captain Condor', created by the prolific Frank S Pepper as the result of a specific instruction from the editor to devise a rival to the explosive success of 'Dan Dare' in 'Eagle'. Condor started out as 'Outlaw Of Space' as a rebel against the Dictator Of The Planets operating from a base on the 'Unknown Moon' of Saturn. After an arc of tales the Dictator was defeated and Condor went on to years of wonderful Sci-Fi exploits - all of them scripted by Pepper, but illustrated by many artists. Demoted to black+white inner pages, with art by Keith Watson (formerly of 'Dan Dare') and Brian Lewis (of 'New Worlds') he achieved even greater heights of invention, with the 'War In Space', 'The Indestructible Men' - plus the finest of them all 'The Push-Button Planet'. As well as tales in 'Lion Annuals' he ended his career with a series of text adventures still well-worth a read. Captain Condor deserves to be remembered as a vital part of British Science Fiction... - Andrew Darlington

I just picked up a set of Lion Comics from #1 to #272 missing only a few (about 5). I am probably going to sell them off, but if someone wants archive info on any of these, It would be a good opportunity to source it. Unfortunately, the first 20 have taped spines and many of the others suffer from rusty staples (I guess no one used Zinc plated staples back then). Anyway, quite a good score here in New Zealand as I have struggled to find many of these early issues and I imagine they are quite rare in the UK - Chris Salmon

Was this the comic that had a sci-fi story - I think it was Captain Condor but not sure - that I remember about a strange planet the hero and sidekick were stranded on. It had a strange telepathic plant that burrowed them around. The last story that I remembered was the two of them cresting a hill to be utterly astounded to find a typical English village below them on this alien world. Can anyone help me out here? - Dave Peet
